Wearing a Wig Through a Toronto Winter: Hats, Static, Dryness and Comfort

Toronto winters are tough on hair, and wigs are no exception. Wind, snow, dry indoor heating, static from wool scarves and the constant on-and-off of hats can leave a wig frizzy, flat or shifting out of place. With a few simple habits, your wig can look just as good in February as it does in June.

1. Wearing hats over your wig

Yes, you can wear a toque or hat over your wig. Choose hats with a smooth or satin lining, which reduce friction and frizz. Put the hat on gently from front to back, and take it off the same way so the hairline stays in place. If your wig feels loose under a hat, ask us about adding a comfort band or adjusting the cap.

2. Fighting static

Dry air plus wool and synthetic fabrics create static, especially on synthetic wigs. A light mist of a wig-safe leave-in conditioner or anti-static spray helps. Avoid brushing a dry wig aggressively; use a wide-tooth comb or wig brush and work from the ends up.

3. Protecting against dryness

Indoor heating pulls moisture from human hair wigs, leaving them dull and brittle. Condition more often in winter, keep heat styling to a minimum, and always use a heat protectant. A professional wash and deep-conditioning treatment every few weeks makes a big difference.

4. Keeping it secure in the wind

Gusts on the street or at the TTC platform can lift a loose wig. Make sure your cap size and adjustable straps are set correctly, and consider a silicone or velvet wig grip for extra hold. If your wig shifts often, it may need a professional re-fit.

5. Snow and wet weather

If your wig gets wet in snow or sleet, gently blot it with a towel (never rub) and let it dry on a wig stand at room temperature. Avoid putting a damp wig straight back on or storing it in a closed bag.

6. Store it right overnight

Keep your wig on a stand away from radiators, heaters and vents. Direct heat can damage synthetic fibres and dry out human hair.
